While we welcome another season change, many of us end up with a not-so-welcome seasonal cough. Most are quick to run to the store for over-the-counter meds that have side effects, artificial dyes, and flavors, but I prefer trying homemade remedies first.
Many things in your pantry could help relieve you from, a nagging cough. All of the ingredients in this mixture are natural cough suppressants and in many homemade cough syrup recipes.
When it comes to treating persistent cough and cold, pineapple juice can soothe a sore throat and helps to cough out all the stubborn mucus.
One study that compared over-the-counter cough syrup and pineapple extract showed that pineapple was five times more efficient.
Patients recovered 4.8 times quicker when taking the natural pineapple remedy, and had an overall improvement in their cold symptoms.
Benefits of Pineapple
Bromelain is an enzyme found in pineapple that has been found to reduce inflammation, with implications for arthritis, cancer, heart disease, and general inflammation in the body.
Bromelain is also an anticoagulant that aids in digestion and improves symptoms of angina. It thins mucus as well, which was discovered when testing pineapple for its effects on tuberculosis.
Pineapples contain a good amount of vitamin C, B vitamins, and potassium as well as calcium, vitamin A, iron, manganese, and beta-carotene.
Pineapple’s antioxidants are effective in fighting germs which is why it helps heal sore throats and cure urinary tract and ear infections.
Its expectorant quality makes it an extraordinary base for a cough suppressant–found to work better than what you might buy in a pharmacy.
Here’s the recipe that is easily made at home:
You’ll Need:
- 1 cup of fresh pineapple juice
- A quarter of a cup of fresh lemon juice
- 1/8 tsp fresh ginger (or powder ginger)
- A tablespoon of raw organic honey
- 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
- You can also add some turmeric but this is optional (this will help with your digestion)
Directions:
① Mix all the ingredients in a blender or stir until well combined in a glass.
② Take a ¼ cup, 2-3 times per day, and repeat recipe daily. Now you have your own cough remedy with no toxic chemicals added. I keep this in the fridge.
When you reach for pineapple juice as your healing modality, it is important to get unprocessed natural juice. Store-bought brands often contain a lot of sugar and not much real fruit. If you have a juicer at home, the best option is to make your own fresh juice.

Hi I m 14 wks pregnant… Would this recipe work for me.. I have dry cough for 10 days and nothing seems to help it… Plz advice
waiting for ur reply
Hello mam,
can u suggest some remedy for a child, age of 1yr, Who is having badly cough n cold …
Plzz
@Tabassum,
AGE 1 year and older. Use raw HONEY 1/2 to 1 tsp (2 to 5 ml) as needed. Raw honey is a natural natural decongestant, it thins the secretions and loosens the cough. Research shows that honey works better than cough syrups to reduce nighttime coughing.
Or:
You can mix raw honey and raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar (ACV). Just mix the two in equal proportions in a small container and stir with a spoon until well mixed. Fill a small teaspoon with the mixture and serve it to your kid at bedtime. If your kid can’t handle the vinegar-y taste, you could increase the raw honey ratio a little bit to suit them.
Remember not to feed honey to a baby under about 1 year of age.
I love your remedies… 😀 u r AwesOme 🙂 😎
Is the coughsyrup also good for childeren 2 years?
@Jennifer,
Sorry, this is not applicable for kids. You can use raw honey to your 2 year old or you can read my reply to Tabassum.
How long can v store ths prepared drink in fridge
What is the Indian name for cayenne pepper.
Also if we can use this as optional or not.
@Anupama,
It’s called lal mirch (Red Chili), Varamilakai, milakai, milakai vatral, pattamilakai, kaintha milakai, varamilaku, Lal mirchi, lal mirch, mirch, etc.
You can skip the cayenne pepper.
Any idea how long this will keep in the fridge as there is no preservative involved?
@Susan Mcgrath,
If store in the fridge, this could last for a month.
