Talk to a doctor, and you’ll probably hear that there is no treatment or cure for Alzheimer’s disease. However, one doctor, Dr. Mary Newport, doesn’t agree with that assessment.
When her husband was only 51, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
After his diagnosis, she spent a significant amount of time researching Alzheimer’s and working to figure out why it occurs and how to stop it.
The traditional medication her husband was taking wasn’t working to slow the disease’s progression. Before long, her husband couldn’t tie his shoes. Out of desperation, Dr. Newport decided to try something new – coconut oil.
What She Did
She began giving her husband four teaspoons of coconut oil each day, and immediately she saw results. His mental state improved, and he was able to tie his shoes, have conversations and read books. She felt like she finally had her husband back.
However, as a doctor, Mary realized that just treating one Alzheimer’s patient with coconut oil didn’t mean it was a cure, so she wanted to quantify the findings with some more research.
The next step she took was to apply for some funding so she can further investigate using coconut oil as a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease.
She did receive the green light to begin studying 65 people who had early onset to moderate stages of the disease. Now she’s studying coconut oil and how it impacts the ability of these patients to function at a higher level.
Some doctors and researchers refer to Alzheimer’s disease like type 2 diabetes.
The brain requires glucose and fat to normally function. However, low fat and low carb diets can have an adverse impact on brain function, which is where coconut oil may help.
Why This Ingredient?
Coconut oil contains ketones, which are a molecule used by the brain for energy if there’s not enough glucose. Dr. Newport believes that this is how coconut oil helped her husband.
Since the brain wasn’t using fats or glucose for food, adding the ketones helped to ensure his brain had another way to get the energy it needed.
This research is exciting, and hopefully, we’ll learn more about the results soon. Unless you’re allergic to coconuts, it’s a good idea begin adding some coconut oil to your diet, especially if you’re dealing with early onset Alzheimer’s disease.
While the research isn’t conclusive yet, it definitely couldn’t hurt to begin using it regularly. It may help prevent Alzheimer’s disease or improve cognitive function for individuals already experiencing the early signs of the disease.
