Once our hair is gone, we end up trying to figure out how we can get our hair to start growing out faster so we can leave that horrid haircut in the past.
Whether you made a big hair blunder or you just want to enjoy healthier, fuller, longer hair, you’re going to love this tip. I’m offering one of my best tips that can be used to make hair grow faster, helping you get the long, glossy, gorgeous hair that you want.
Onion Water is the Secret
Just a few months ago, I was reading about onion water as a secret for growing hair. While onion on your hair doesn’t sound very wonderful, I was all ready to give this trick a try. After all, I love any idea that will get my hair to grow faster. Unfortunately, the instructions I found were pretty vague. I wasn’t sure how much water to use, or how long to leave it on hair. Should I use it on dry hair or wet hair? These are questions that I wanted to have answered.
Why Onions?
Onion is rich in sulfur. This mineral is one of the main building blocks of hair. It improves blood circulation and provides the hair follicles with sufficient nourishment. Onion also has anti-bacterial properties, so it helps with scalp infections that might contribute to hair loss.
Directions:
With the little information I found, I decided to try this myself. I took one fresh onion, chopped it up, and boiled the onion pieces in 3 cups of water for 10-15 minutes.
① After allowing the water to cool, I placed the onion water in an airtight container (or you can use a spray bottle), store it in the fridge.
② I had made quite a bit of water, and I hoped it would last for some time. After all, who wants to make onion water each time they wash their hair?
③ I started using some of the onion water on my hair each time I shampooed my hair. I always used shampoo and conditioner first, and then I applied/sprayed the onion water to my hair, massaging the liquid into the scalp.
④ I only left the water on my hair for about five minutes (even longer if I’m not lazy), and then I used tepid water to rinse the onion water away.

The Verdict:
I immediately started noticing that the onion water made my hair extremely soft. I have a habit of twirling my hair, and with my hair becoming so soft, it was hard to stop touching my soft hair. My husband also said that he noticed my hair was glossy and shiny, which I didn’t notice at first.
One container of the onion water usually lasted about a week. I simply left the water in the shower (in a spray bottle). I was afraid it might start molding since I didn’t refrigerate it, but it never went bad. While the onion smell did get stronger over time, the smell didn’t stay in my hair, which was a relief.
The great news is that this onion water trick worked. I was shocked at the results.
For the last 3-4 months, I’ve measured my hair growth. My hair usually grows about a ¾ inch each month. However, in the month that I’ve been using the onion water, my hair grew an inch. While it doesn’t sound like a lot, that growth will add up over time.
It Still Smells Onion After Washing Your Hair?
① My best recommendation is to apply lemon juice on your hair after washing.
How to Do it:
Grab some lemons and squeeze the juice out. Apply the juice in your hair and let it sit for few minutes before rinsing with warm water. If the smell persists, apply more lemon juice and rinse it off the same. Your hair will be shiny and smell pleasant and fresh.
② Use baking soda or sodium bicarbonate to neutralize the onion smell.
How to Do it:
Add two tbsp of baking soda or sodium bicarbonate to your shampoo (just enough use for your hair), massage to your scalp and hair for a while, then wash your hair as normal.
③ Apply Mint or Rosemary Infusion
This is one of the best natural treatment as well in getting rid of onion smells from your hair. The rosemary will also stimulate hair growth and completely revitalize it.
How to Do it:
All you need to do is simmer a few mint leaves and some rosemary in hot water for 5 minutes. Once cooled, apply to wet hair after washing.
Precaution:
Application of raw onion juice can lead to skin irritation and should be tested on a small area before application on the affected areas.
This sounds very cool, i will try it even though i have my hair in twists now, cant wait
Thanks for the response
Hi,
I just want to know how often do you do this rinse for it to be effective? I ask because I am also going to start incorporating deep conditionings and hot oil treatments to my hair. So I just need to know for the results to be effective how to mix this in.
Thanks
@Faith,
You can do this 2 or 3x a week.
???? wow I’m amazed at the people here; this young lady explained the directions as clear as water and a lot of people here are asking things that she had already said and explained. Read people, read!! If possible read it a second time so you don’t ask empty questions and make yourself look like a dunkey???? Lol
How often do you use the onion spray? Once a day? Once a week?
