I know better than to dismiss germs, bacteria and viruses as insignificant due to their tiny size and quite frankly, I am overly concerned about the risk they pose. You can never be too safe, not even in your own home and that’s why I go to great lengths to make sure that those tiny pests don’t stand a chance.
Many of the things we touch are swarming with bacteria and the only thing standing between them and our fragile health is the hand sanitizer. We find them in restaurants, bars and even at the movies, so why wouldn’t we have one at home? But the thing is, most sanitizers easily dry our hands out due to its alcohol content.
Apart from that, using them inordinately could actually cause the germs to get immune to it. Yet, there is no obvious reason for why we shouldn’t use hand sanitizers at home and the better question would be whether to buy one or make some ourselves.
If you are a fan of do-it-yourself remedies as I am, then you will surely see the upsides of going the whole nine yards and experimenting a little.
You’ll Need:
1/4 cup Aloe Vera Gel
1/2 tsp Vegetable Glycerin (optional)
1 teaspoon Rubbing Alcohol — { or you can use witch hazel which has antibacterial properties }
20 drops Grapefruit Seed Extract — {a natural antibiotic and antiseptic}
10 drops Cinnamon Essential Oil — { for antibacterial }
10 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil — { or you can substitute this with lemon essential oil }
Distilled Water — { to thin the mixture to your desired consistency }
Tip: Add about ¼ teaspoon of Vitamin E oil as a natural preservative to increase shelf life of this product. (It will also help soften hands!)
1Grab 1/4 cup of aloe vera gel plus 1 tsp of rubbing alcohol (or witch hazel) and 1/2 tsp of glycerine (optional) in a small container/bowl and mix them well.
2Then, start adding 10 drops of cinnamon essential oil and 10 drops of tea tree oil along with 20 drops of (GSE) Grapefruit Seed Extract (a natural antibiotic and antiseptic). If you prefer a scented sanitizer, you can add other essential oils of your choice ( try experimenting with orange, lavender, lemongrass or peppermint essential oils).
3Mix well and add distilled water to thin to desired consistency
4Use a small funnel or medicine dropper to transfer hand sanitizer into spray or pump type bottles.
In order to get your hands clean with the homemade hand sanitizer you can’t be afraid of getting them dirty in the first place. Don’t worry as this is just a way of saying that the homemade solution will require your attention and will take up a few of your precious minutes.
In a nutshell, one needs to acquire some rubbing alcohol and essential oils, with the latter being chosen exclusively based on taste and preferences. The final product will not only sanitize your hands, but also leave them smelling the way you like them to.
