Do you have dark spots? These can be a very frustrating and embarrassing problem. It’s difficult to hide dark spots, and they can impact self-confidence severely.

Getting rid of hyperpigmentation is possible in two ways. The first option involves the use of commercial creams, which are usually chemical-based.

The second possibility involves homemade, natural remedies. These can deliver excellent results, as long as you’re consistent in their usage.

Some natural substances are very effective at regulating melanin production or lightening the dark spots on the skin. Such natural products have to be used over a longer period, but they can help you get rid of the dark spots altogether.

What Is Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation involves the appearance of excessively dark spots on the face or the body. This problem is caused by excessive melanin production.

The pigment is responsible for giving skin its color could become concentrated in a particular area because of numerous factors. Aging and unprotected exposure to sunlight is two of these factors.

Hyperpigmentation can affect just about everyone, but certain groups of people are more susceptible. People of African, Asian, Mediterranean or Asian origin are more likely to experience dark spots than those belonging to other ethnicities.

The Main Causes of Hyperpigmentation

  • Unprotected exposure to sunlight is one issue that could cause the excessive production of melanin but various other trigger factors could contribute to hyperpigmentation.
  • Hereditary factors could make some people more prone to getting dark spots on the skin. The use of hormone treatments like oral contraceptives could also be a trigger.

Skin inflammation, acne, and compulsive skin picking may also contribute to the appearance of dark spots and scars.

  • Women could get dark spots on their skin due to the hormonal changes occurring during pregnancy. Melasma, also known as the mask of pregnancy, is a hyperpigmentation issue that is connected precisely to these changes.

Melasma could affect different parts of the body like the nose, the upper parts of the cheeks, the upper lip and the forehead.

  • Hyperpigmentation may have several expressions that are different from dark spots. Freckles and the appearance of dark circles underneath the eyes are also considered a form of hyperpigmentation.

At-Home Remedies for Dark Spots

The first prerequisite for getting rid of dark spots fast is proper skin exfoliation on a regular basis. The darker patches are also found in the upper layers of the skin. The removal of dead cells can help to get rid of the issue faster.

Many hyperpigmentation remedies are found in your kitchen pantry. All that you need to do is create a mask at home, apply it to the affected area and enable the ingredients to act. The ingredients used in these recipes are safe, natural, toxin-free and 100 percent edible.

Here’s the two options for the facial mask you can use:

Daily Ayurvedic Mask

You will need:

  • 1 Crushed tomato
  • 2 tsp Oatmeal
  • ½ tsp Organic Greek yogurt

Use a sieve to extract the juice from the crushed tomato into a bowl. Add the oatmeal and yogurt and mix. Apply onto affected patches and allow to dry naturally for about 15-20 minutes before rinsing off with lukewarm water. Repeat this once a day, morning or evening.

Natural Ayurvedic Exfoliation Remedy

You will need:

  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder

Simply mix the lemon juice and turmeric together and apply for 15 minutes before rinsing off with cold water.

Do this one to two times a week, more often if needed, preferably at bedtime as you should not expose your skin to the sun right after you do this treatment.

Can Hyperpigmentation Affect Anyone?

While it is true that hyperpigmentation can affect anyone, it is more common among certain ethnicities such as African, Mediterranean, Asian or Latin, in other words -people with a naturally darker skin.

How To Prevent Hyperpigmentation

Always put sunscreen on exposed body parts before leaving your home. The ultraviolet light could affect your skin even on rainy and cloudy days.

For best results, use sunscreen with SPF 15 or more during the winter and SPF 30 or more during the summer to prevent the over-stimulation of melanocytes.

A mineral-based rather than chemical-based sunscreen will deliver better results and keep your skin healthy.
