For someone who has dry, sensitive skin, the arrival of each new season brings more reasons to worry than to rejoice and this is not the way to prepare for summer. High temperatures, dry air, and hot winds are all devastating for sensitive skin and your face is always exposed to the elements.
Especially if you like taking long walks or spend a lot of time outdoors, it is vital to protect your skin from the detrimental effects of these elements to avoid premature aging.
Cosmetic shops will invite you with open arms and countless face creams advertised as natural and side effects free, but one needs to be quite naïve to fall for such campaigns.
Granted top-of-the-line creams do what they are supposed to do and alleviate the symptoms of harsh weather, as soon as you stop using them the skin starts deteriorating.
This makes it impossible to exit the vicious circle that compels you to buy ever larger quantities of cream, and God forbid they contain toxic chemicals.
Fortunately, for every commercial product that we could pick up from a convenience store shelf, there is one that can be made at home.
They share some of the ingredients, but the do-it-yourself remedies are clean of toxic compounds and this is something that we can take to the bank.
Whether you plan on creating a sun protecting cream for a day at the seaside or one that requires a daily application, you will constantly stumble upon the same few harmless, natural ingredients.
The best part is that the blend is made up of only three natural ingredients, which happen to be packed full of antioxidants – perfect for protecting against free radicals and keeping your skin silky smooth!
I’ll also note that a little bit goes a long way. One batch tends to last me a couple months.
After the switch to this homemade face cream, my face feels soft and noticeably smooth when I wake up in the morning. Aside from being used as a face moisturizer, I applied this cream on my hands, feet, elbows and any spots that I feel dry, so I made a separate batch on this.
Why These Ingredients
Olive Oil
Olive oil is one of those miracle substances that seems to have endless uses. It works wonders for dry skin, and is actually the base ingredient for many store-bought moisturizers.
Olive oil is packed with antioxidants that can repair dry, irritated or inflamed skin, and can help prevent and repair the damage that can lead to wrinkles or sunspots.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is another wonder oil, and one of its specialties is moisturizing! There are so many ways you can use it – lather it right onto the skin, apply to problem areas like your hands, cuticles, and joints, or add a few spoonfuls to your bath! It leaves skin feeling incredibly soft and it also smells amazing.
Cocoa Butter
When used as a moisturizer, it provides a barrier on your skin and helps lock in moisture. It is also very beneficial for people who suffer from skin problems such as; dermatitis and eczema.
It is definitely good for helping to keep you looking younger and it is able to penetrate the top layer of your skin, helping to keep all levels of skin hydrated.
Homemade All-Natural Face Cream
You’ll Need:
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
- 2½ tablespoons cocoa butter
- ½ tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
How To Do:
① Start melting the coconut oil by sticking your pyrex jar or container in a bowl of hot water.
② Then, you can combine all the ingredients in a small pan or double boiler and heat them up just until the cocoa butter melts. Remove from heat.
③ Allow the mixture to cool down slightly, place in a small sealed container/jar and shake vigorously, let it sit for a few minutes and shake again.
④ You can store the mixture in the fridge and depending on the temperature, the mixture may also solidify similar to how coconut oil/cocoa butter does on their own.
⑤ In the winter time, the cream solidifies. You just have to use your finger to get a little bit out of the jar, rub it around in your palms or between your fingers to warm it up a bit and then apply.
