“I’ve tried everything!” How many times have you said that in frustration? Over-the-counter medicines.. under the counter and in the cabinet home remedies..the new hot diet….the OLD hot diet. Maybe you really have tried just about everything to fix what ails you, but have you tried grapefruit juice?

The tart taste may not exactly be your flavor, but I bet if you knew all the many benefits in a cup of fresh grapefruit juice the truth would be a lot easier to swallow. Grapefruit juice has been shown to work wonders for everything from diabetes to insomnia, to having glowing skin.

Whether you choose white (blond), pink or red, the grapefruit, part of the citrus family, is packed with essential nutrients and vitamins that support your body from head to toe, inside and out.

Drink to your health and try grapefruit juice for some of these common conditions.

Grapefruit Helps in Losing Weight
Grapefruit is high in enzymes that burn fats, has high water content and has less sodium. A combination of these three characteristics make grapefruit a perfect food for increasing your body’s metabolism. Try eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice every day and you will notice how quickly you lose those extra pounds.

Grapefruit Treats Common Ailments
Grapefruits are rich in vitamin C, a vitamin that supports the immune system and a proven cold and flu fighter. Eating grapefruit or drinking its juice helps treat common cold and fever, dissolve gallstones, boost liver function and enhance immunity against infections. As grapefruit contains a dietary fiber called pectin, it thus promotes better digestion. In addition, if you want to have a healthy and smooth skin, try including grapefruit in your diet.

Cancer Prevention:
Lycopene is a carotenoid pigment that is responsible for the red color of grapefruit. It is a powerful agent against tumors and cancers as it acts as a scavenger of cancer-causing free radicals. Lycopene works best with vitamins A and C, which are also found in grapefruit.

An antioxidant compound, called naringenin, is also found in grapefruit. Naringenin helps repair damaged DNA in prostate cancer cells. DNA repair contributes to cancer prevention as it impedes the reproduction of cancer cells.

Lower Cholesterol Levels
The antioxidants found in grapefruit are effective in reducing cholesterol levels. However, if you are on prescription drugs, do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice. Grapefruit has a negative reaction against many prescription drugs such as those used in treating depression, allergies, high blood pressure, seizures, impotence, heart palpitations and even HIV. Inform your physician if you want to use grapefruit as a regular form of treatment.

Prevents Arthritis and Works as an Antiseptic
Grapefruit contains salicylic acid that helps break down the body’s inorganic calcium, which builds up in the cartilage of joints and may lead to arthritis. If you have arthritis, try drinking grapefruit juice with apple cider vinegar. You will notice a reduction in your arthritis symptoms.

The salicylic acid in grapefruit also works as a powerful antiseptic. In addition, grapefruit seed extracts can be added to water to make an antiseptic spray for treating bacterial and fungal infections.

Grapefruit Can Give You Beautiful Skin

Grapefruit applied directly to your skin can also give you beautiful skin. The anti-oxidants in grapefruit will fight free radicals in the skin that can cause lines, wrinkles, discolorations and other blemishes that can make you look older than you are. Free radicals are elements that float throughout the body and your skin because they aren’t attached to anything.

Grapefruit Sugar Scrub This basic scrub can be made with dozens of different ingredients and oils to customize it to your own taste, but many women love this simple scrub just the way it is. You can use it to exfoliate your face and body on a regular basis, and use it to give yourself a home pedicure to get your feet ready for summer. Since grapefruit juice has natural antibacterial properties it’s perfect to use on your feet in the summertime.

How To:To make the scrub mix fresh pink grapefruit juice in a large mixing bowl with granulated white sugar, or raw brown sugar, whichever you prefer. Add a tablespoon or so of grated grapefruit zest, and enough Sweet Almond oil to give the entire mixture a scrub consistency. Once it’s all mixed pour it into individual containers. The Sweet Almond oil is a natural preservative, so you don’t need to store this in the fridge. This scrub also makes a great gift when put into a pretty package.

Grapefruit facial toner Another great basic skin care mixture you can make with grapefruit juice is a safe and all natural facial toner. Grapefruit contains the highest concentration of vitamin C of all citrus fruits, which is vital for collagen production.

How To: Just mix some Witch Hazel, which is available at the drugstore , with some fresh grapefruit juice and a drop of Tea Tree oil. Mix together well, and store in the refrigerator. This easy to make toner works on all skin types, and is especially great for people with combination skin.

Grapefruit lip balm This is super easy to make and it tastes fantastic. It’s also great for keeping your lips smooth and supple all year round. To make your own lip balm you’ll need beeswax. Beeswax is available at health food stores or food co-ops or you can order it online.

How To: Melt down some beeswax to a liquid state. Add about a tablespoon of grated grapefruit zest and some grapefruit juice. Add some grated orange zest if you want the lip balm to have a scent with more depth to it. Pour the mixture into a small pot or container and let it set. Once it hardens you will have your own grapefruit lip balm.
