When you treat yourself to a facial steam, this is what you are doing. You’re opening up those pores and letting out all the unwanted sebum, clogged dirt, toxins and grime your skin has accumulated. But that’s not all a facial steam does. When you add in certain herbs, flowers, plants or essential oils, it releases those beneficial properties into your open, cleared pores.
So rather than investing $50 to $100 to get a Thai facial experience in a spa, why not take a quick trip to your supermarket and put together your own retreat at home for a fraction of the cost?
How to make a facial steam for oily skin and acne? Use the powerful anti-bacterial astringent combination of chamomile and lemongrass. Both of these healthy skin herbs will fight bacteria.
- Chamomile tea is full of anti-oxidants, great anti aging remedy by fight free radicals, fight inflammation, sooth your acne, and give your skin a healthy glow.
- Lemongrass is an anti-bacterial which is great for acne-prone skin, normalize overactive oil glands, and it will revitalize and tone your skin too. The two together have a beautiful, uplifting aroma.
To make this oily skin facial steam, you will need:
- 1-2 bags of chamomile tea
- 2-3 fresh sticks Lemongrass (slashed, but don’t let them separate)
- 1 pot boiling water
- 1 large bowl
Boil the water before adding the herbs. If you have a glass ceramic pan, use it, otherwise metal is fine. Reduce the heat to a simmer and then add all of the dried herbs.
Simmer for three to five minutes and then place your pan and simmering herbs on a table where you can sit comfortably over the steam. Drape a towel over your head (make sure your hair is pulled back from your face) and inhale the steam for 30 seconds, or until you can’t stand the heat anymore.
This treatment is refreshing for skin and perfect for normalizing an oily complexion. Try it before a clay mask for a super potent anti-acne skin treatment. Finish by dabbing distilled witch hazel on the skin to close pores, or even some of the infusion, as long as it is no longer hot.

1) Only fresh lemon grass is available in the store. Do we first need to dry it under the sun?
2) If the facial steam is used before a clay mask, do I still need to tone my face with witch hazel after steaming the face/before applying the mask?
Please advise. Thank you.
@Lorna,
1.) Fresh lemon grass is the best – you don’t need to dry them out under the sun.
2.) Yes, you can use a toner like witch hazel after the mask application.
