Making your beauty products at home gives you absolute control over what goes in those products. One ingredient you may not have considered using is green tea. Green tea makes an excellent ingredient in DIY beauty products, such as sugar body scrubs, toners or even skincare creams.

While you already know that drinking green tea offers many great healthy benefits, you may be surprised that using green tea topically offers great benefits for skin as well.

Green tea is high in a particular type of antioxidant known as polyphenols also found in olives and grapes. Polyphenols can help achieve younger, healthier-looking skin, and who wouldn’t want that? Green tea is shown to help with skin’s moisture retention, defense against sun damage and even new skin cell development.

Whether you decide to make a green tea sugar body scrub or you want to try other DIY skin care products with green tea, here are just a few of the benefits your skin will enjoy.

① Improved Protection from Sun Damage

One benefit of green tea for skin care is its ability to protect skin from sun damage. Multiple scientific studies show that green tea extra helps neutralize damage from the sun. It also helps protect against sunburn. Exposure to the sun is one of the main factors in aging, so using products with green tea will protect skin from the sun and also help to prevent premature aging.

While this doesn’t mean you should skip sunscreen, you may want to layer a skincare product with green tea beneath your sunscreen for added skin protection.

② Excellent Acne Treatment

Green tea treats acne effectively as well, another excellent benefit of using it in DIY skin care products. The catechins included in green tea are antibacterial and may help to reduce hormone activity as well, offering an excellent acne treatment that doesn’t come with negative side effects. One study even showed that green tea is as affected as benzoyl peroxide and comes with fewer potential side effects.

③ Fights Redness and Inflammation

You’ll also find that green tea can reduce inflammation, helping to fight redness, irritation, and swell of the skin. Since it fights inflammation, it may be useful in treating rosacea, which causes redness across the nose and cheeks.

④ Smooth, Even Skin Tone

After using products with green tea, skin is left smooth and soft. The green tea also acts as a toner, evening out skin tone as well. Green tea helps the skin retain moisture, which contributes to promoting soft, beautiful skin.

⑤ Anti-Aging Results

With a high concentration of antioxidants, as well as anti-inflammatory properties, green tea offers excellent anti-aging results as well. The polyphenols in green tea help to slow down various signs of aging. The tea also helps to improve skin firmness and elasticity, and both are key to preventing and reducing the signs of aging.

With so many great benefits to offer, it’s easy to see why green tea is such an excellent addition to DIY skincare products. Add it to your favorite sugar scrub recipe or other homemade skin care products to enjoy the benefits it offers.

      hi Ghazala,
      You call that matcha tea powder – Matcha is essentially processed green tea leaves that have been stone-ground into a delicate powder. You can create your own version by grounding finely dried green tea leaves using a mortar and pestle and add this to our sugar scrub.

      @Nisa,
      Leaf tea means the leaf of tea which you can find in a tea bag. Or you can actually buy leaf tea itself in a package.
