Forget spending thousands of dollars on expensive creams and treatments. Some of the most powerful anti-ageing ingredients cost next to nothing, and they’re right in your kitchen cupboard.
The main thing I love about DIY beauty is that it doesn’t contain artificial fragrances, detergents, sodium laurel sulfate, petrochemicals, mineral oils or parabens. It’s pure goodness going directly into your skin.
What Does Glycolic Acid Do for my Skin?
That’s why I love creating my own beauty regimen and the ingredients that I normally use are fruits. Citrus fruits are a natural source of glycolic acid, one of the safest forms of alpha hydroxy acid (AHAs), an ingredient used in professional anti-aging chemical peels.
Glycolic acid works as an exfoliating agent because of its high acidity but easy solubility. It can also help lighten discoloration of the skin, such as sun spots or age spots and help those with acne-prone and blackhead-prone skin.
When placed on the skin as part of an exfoliating cream or gel, it goes under the damaged upper layers of skin and destroys the ‘glue’ which holds dead skin to the surface.
What are the benefits of gelatin on my skin?
Gelatin is made of animal collagen and when you apply this to your skin, it will bind with the dead skin cells and oils that clogs the pores. It also has a softening effect on your skin and once it dries, it will also help to firm and tone.
What You’ll need:
1/2 packet unflavored Gelatin
3-4 tbsp freshly squeeze citrus fruit juice, pick the one that’s right for your skin type*
( I’m on the oily side, so I used orange and lemon)
1Put the 1/2 packet of unflavored gelatin in a microwave-safe bowl.
2Stir in or add the fresh fruit juice of your choice.
3Mix them well and pop in the microwave for 10-15 seconds or until the gelatin has melted completely.
4Stir to check if it is in the right thick consistency. Once the mixture has cooled down a bit, spread the paste gently and equally using a facial mask brush or spatula on your clean face and neck, avoiding the upper lip and eye area.
5Now lie down, relax and leave the mask on until it gets dry. Then peel it off, start under your chin and peel it off in an upward motion, this will tingle a bit. Finally rinse with fresh cold water; pat your skin dry with a clean towel.
*Which Fruit Juice is best for your skin type?
For normal to dry skin use peach, raspberry, apple, papaya, pear or strawberry juice or the combination of these fruits.
For oily skin use lemon, lime, carrot, orange, grapefruit, tomato or white grape juice, or the combination of these fruits.
Hi Calleigh!!
I have discoloration around my mouth. I am tan and Indian. The area around my mouth is darker than the rest of my face. Please help me as this is really embarrassing.
Two questions-First I buy gelatin in 16 oz. containers so how much would I use and since I don’t have a microwave anymore (we got rid of it since we never used it anyways and it took up space) could I use a stove top method instead.
I answered my own question -i looked up gelatin and did some math. I also read other comments and answers for the stove top question. I’m unsure if i did this properly BC it’s not peeling off. I saw a box of gelatin w 32 packets was 8 oz so I used 1 & 1/2 tsp gelatin to 4 the lemon juice. Maybe my maths were flawed But I suck at math. I hope this works otherwise BC I spend so much on supplements for chronic fatigue that I’ve got nonr left for beauty supplies
Can I use collagen powder instead of geletin?
