Our hair takes a lot of abuse and even though we don’t like to accept it, it is our obsession to look fresh and different all the time that hurts it the most. It is fairly common for women to start noticing their hair becoming dry, brittle and getting lots of split ends.

This is often an early sign that the hair is experiencing a major problem, that won’t just stop here. By the time they realize that they have a serious problem, the hair is so frail that it becomes brittle.

Causes for Dry, Thin Hair

One of the causes for dry thin hair is excessive washing, something that most of us do without knowing it and as a result, natural oil is removed.

If the flat iron and hair blowers are your best friends, then you are also very likely to have a problem with dry thin hair and addressing these underlying causes will help.

Other factors:

  • Iron Deficiency
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Allergies
  • Stress

Proven Natural Remedies

① Olive oil
It is strongly recommended by those who use massage therapy to revitalize the scalp, with the procedure being suggested prior to rinsing.

What To Do:
Simply warm olive oil or coconut oil and massage into your scalp and coat your hair with it. Slip on a shower cap for about 45 minutes before rinsing.

② Fenugreek Seeds
Fenugreek works wonder on dry hair, because of its high mucilage and protein content. It softens your tresses and adds shine to dull hair.

Fenugreek or Methi seeds are extremely effective against hair fall, dandruff and help to reverse baldness and hair thinning.

What To Do:

  • Boil 2 cups of water and add 2 tbsp of fenugreek seeds. Let it simmer for about 10 minutes and turn the stove off. Set aside the pot and leave it overnight. Or you can let the mixture sit for about 2 -3 hours but leaving it overnight is best.
  • The following day, put the mixture in a blender and grind for a minute or until the particles turned into a creamy, nice paste consistency. You can add a little water and blend to make a thick paste.
  • Next, grab 1 tbsp of coconut oil and put it in a microwave-safe container. Since coconut oil solidifies at room temperature, you can go ahead and warm it up in the microwave for about 10 seconds. Once the oil is melted, add it to the fenugreek seed mixture and turn your blender on for a couple of seconds until everything is perfectly combined.
  • Now, spritz some water in your hair to make it damp a bit and rub a slight amount of coconut oil. With a damp hair, start by parting them in section and massage the paste into your hair or you can use a dye brush and apply a generous amount of mixture from roots to tips.
  • If you have a long hair, make sure to put a towel on your shoulder since it could be a little messy but is worth the effort.

③ Use Dairy
Yogurt has natural milk proteins, which strengthens your hair.

What To Do:
Mix half a cup of plain yogurt with half a cup of mayonnaise and egg whites from one egg. Apply all over your hair with extra attention to your tips. Put on a shower cap and leave it in for 30 minutes. Rinse out with warm water and shampoo to reveal your shiny, soft, healthy hair.

④ Coconut Milk and Flour
Coconut oil lubricates the hair shaft.

What To Do:
Try mixing 1 cup of coconut milk and 2 teaspoons of gram flour to create a concoction paste that can be used for a refreshing massage.

Apply and massage gently on your scalp and hair for 5 minutes, once the procedure is complete, gently rinse the hair and repeat this routine at least a couple of times throughout the month.

Do this at least once a week.

⑤ Apple Cider Vinegar
Don’t use apple cider vinegar alone, but instead combine it with equal parts of water (like 1/2 cup ACV + 1/2 cup of water) then use the mixture to massage the hair.

Take your time and enjoy the pleasant feeling, while allowing the concoction to sit on your hair for 10 minutes or longer to address the issue of dry, thin hair and also add some volume. Rinse as usual.

⑥ Vegetable oil and Honey
Those who don’t have the time or dislike the idea of a massage, should at least help themselves to some vegetable oil and honey and combine these two ingredients into a hair mask.

Allow it to work its wonder for half an hour before rinsing and your hair will become thick and much stronger.

⑦ Egg and Milk
While you can combine egg whites with water to create a substitute for shampoo, you can also use the healing power of eggs and milk through a massage solution.

It doesn’t take longer than 5 minutes for it to start working and if you take the time to repeat the routine on a weekly basis, the results will speak for themselves.

What To Do:
Beat the egg whites and mix with a cup of skimmed milk until the foam is formed. Apply to the hair and scalp and massage thoroughly. Leave it on for at least 5 minutes and rinse. Make this a routine at least twice a week.

⑦ Egg whites
Eggs contain protein and lecithin that strengthen hair and add shine.

What To Do:
Beat the egg whites or 1 egg plus some plain, full-fat yogurt. Apply and gently massage it into your hair and let it sit for 30 minutes before rinsing with cool water.

This works like a charm as a replacement for shampoo, especially if you have serious doubts about the chemical ingredients the latter contain. The nutrients found on the egg white will make your hair instantly shiny and healthy.

It is also good to mix egg whites with a few teaspoons of water to use as a substitute shampoo.

⑧ Vinegar
Regular vinegar will also work smoothly as a massage solution and once again it is advisable not to use it raw but in conjunction with water.

What To Do:
Mix a solution of 2 cups of water with ½ cup of vinegar and massage your scalp and let it sit for 5 minutes before rinsing.

In order to amplify the effects, you could also add a teaspoon of vinegar when preparing the hair rinse, as vinegar is famous for its acidic effects and can help remove unwanted debris from your scalp.

⑨ Washing
Pay attention to what type of shampoo you are using, as many of those we find in supermarkets are rich in chemicals that hurt our hair in many ways.

What To Do:
Decrease the frequency of washing the hair, while using a shampoo that was created to address specifically the issue of dry hair to avoid further deterioration. Over washing also removes your hair’s moisture.

⑩ Heat
Flat irons have a negative effect on your hair and are among the chief cause of drying and thinning it.

What To Do:
Refrain from using them excessively and also try to avoid hair blowers when possible, to speed up the healing process.

Let your hair dry naturally.

I dont know but I felt a bounce and amazing shine in my dull hair. The leftover paste I had kept in the fridge, I think I can use it again after 5-6 days? Thank you once again for these amazing posts!

      @Rupakshi,
You can use regular apple cider vinegar but the one that is really effective is the unfiltered, raw ACV because it contains lots of enzymes
