The perfect curls look so girly and sophisticated that every woman wants to enjoy them every once in a while. The curling iron is a simple tool that can be used to achieve that spectacular appearance.

How long have you been using a curling iron? You probably think that you are a styling expert but what if I told you that you are probably committing at least one mistake when it comes to curling your hair?

The biggest mistakes result in limp curls or curls that last a very short period of time. This article contains some of the biggest issues stemming from the incorrect use of the curling iron and the best ways to fix those.

① Not Prepping Your Hair
The failure to prepare your hair for the procedure is one of the biggest mistakes that you can make. The curling iron relies on heat and it can damage your hair. The damage will be serious, if you do nothing in terms of prepping your hair.

A heat protecting spray is the most important styling product that you need to invest in. Always apply the spray after having a shower and blow dry your hair completely before attempting to curl it.

A styling product can also be used to “fix” the curls and make them last longer. You have a wide range of options to choose among. Pick something that makes the curls long-lasting and that gives them beautiful texture.

② Curling Your Hair in the Wrong Direction
Do you pay attention to the direction in which you curl your hair?

If you want to get a more natural appearance, you will need to get in the habit of curling hair away from your face.

To get this appearance, you need to turn the hair around the iron’s barrel in clockwise direction on the right side of your face and in the opposite direction on the left side. Try it to see how the results are going to be better than usual.

③ Twirling the Iron Instead of Your Hair
This mistake is a really common one – many women clip the hair and twist the iron upwards. This technique will result in a really tight curl rather than a more natural-looking wave.

The correct technique is simple to execute. Hold your curling iron in a way that makes the barrel face the floor. Starting from the root, wrap your hair around the barrel and lock the tip in last.

If you follow the procedure correctly, you will get long-lasting curls and you will also benefit from volume right from the roots.

④ Does Iron Size Matter?
Do you have several curling irons that you use to achieve a specific curl size? The larger irons are not needed and you will simply be wasting your money on such equipment.

A smaller curling iron can be used to get a number of different styles. If you want to get bigger curls, you will simply need to treat larger sections of your hair. The technique matters and you will do just fine with one piece of styling equipment.

⑤ Curling Too Much Hair at a Time
Sectioning your hair correctly is essential for getting the best curling results. A slightly larger section of hair will give you looser curls but if you try to style too much hair, you will get uneven results.

The distribution of heat is essential for making your curls look similar and for their longevity. Try with several section sizes to figure out which ones result in the best curls. To get a natural look, you will need to vary the size of the sections.

⑥ Choosing the Most In-expensive Curling Iron
Have you just spotted a major discount at the local store, which prompted you to buy a new curling iron? This approach could be a serious mistake, especially if you curl your hair frequently.

Investing in a high quality piece will protect your hair from damage and give you the beautiful curls that you are hoping for. Pick an iron that has a ceramic barrel. Avoid spring hinge irons. These could create unwanted creases in the place where the clip presses against the hair.

A marcel iron will require some getting used to but it is the option that professional stylists recommend. You can also opt for an iron that has no clip whatsoever – just learn to hold the edge of your lock with your fingertips while curling the rest.

⑦ Holding Your Hair in the Iron Too Long
The heat that the curling iron generates can be incredibly damaging, especially if you keep your hair wrapped around the barrel for an excessively long period of time. Fragile hair should be kept wrapped around the barrel for no longer than a couple of seconds. You should also try the lower heat settings first. These will often deliver sufficiently good results.

⑧ Running Your Fingers through the Hair Immediately after Curling It
In order to set properly, the curls need several minutes to cool down. You may feel tempted to touch them right away but you will be decreasing their longevity and changing their shape this way.

Wait a few minutes and place some finishing spray on your fingers before running them through the curls. If you want the look to be a bit messier and more natural, break the finished curls with your fingers.

To get a more natural, slightly messy curl, break up your finished curls with your fingers at this point. Alternatively, you can brush them lightly for a smoother wave. This will also help you distribute product evenly throughout your strands.

Finally, make sure to remember that many curly styles can be created by using variations on these techniques. If you have a specific look in mind that you want to try, ask your stylist to show you how to recreate it the next time you visit the salon.

They’ll appreciate the chance to give you a tutorial, and you’ll get a hairstyle that works with your specific cut and texture.
