Although you might be afraid of added sugar, there are plenty of reasons to add honey to your tea. Honey is a natural sweetener that has gotten a bad rap in the crazy world of carbs and sugar. But there are some real advantages to consuming honey.

Besides its delectable flavor, honey also poses great health and nutritional benefits, making it a great sweetener for your tea or other hot beverage. If you’re still on the fence about things, consider these seven reasons to add honey to your tea.

1. Fight off Infection

One of the best reasons to add honey to your tea is how it can fight disease. Honey has been known to act as an antibacterial agent to many illnesses in traditional Asian medicine. Better yet, unlike conventional antibiotics that wipe all good AND bad bacteria from your body, honey is able to differentiate between the two, providing targeted treatment to bacterial illness. Of course, it’s always good to check with your doctor or health care practitioner before using honey in addition to or in replacement of modern medicine. Please consult with your doctor before using honey in this way!

2. Supplement B-Vitamin Levels

Are you a vegetarian? Chances are you’re missing out on some essential B vitamins and amino acids that are usually found in animal proteins. The good news is that honey is rich in many B vitamins. In fact, it’s recently been noted as the most complete plant source of protein on the planet! B vitamins are known for their ability to boost energy, so feel free to use honey in your tea next time you brew a cup.

3. Strengthen the Immune System

There’s a reason your mom gave you tea with honey when you were sick. Honey is known for boosting immunity. Its antiviral and antifungal abilities can help mitigate even the toughest colds and flues. Mixing a mere tablespoon into a hot cup of tea can instantly open up your head and make you feel better. Adding honey to your tea on a regular basis will keep common colds at bay and prevent you from getting sick as often.

4. Aid Digestion

Do you suffer from painful stomach cramps, bloating, or even IBS and Colitis? Honey is a fantastic homeopathic remedy for soothing an upset stomach. Whether you enjoy green, black, or oolong tea, adding a touch of honey is a great way to take your tea from a simple hot beverage to a healing tonic. Try it the next time you feel a stomach ache coming on. Or if you have a history of stomach ailments, add honey to your tea on a regular basis for preventative measures.

5. High in Antioxidants

We would all love to amp up our intake of antioxidants. These immunity-boosting, free-radical-fighting agents prevent us from getting sick, developing chronic illness, and premature aging. Honey is a fantastic source of antioxidants. Specifically, its concentrated form makes it great for people who are on the go. If you’re always in a hurry but want to stay healthy, adding a little honey to your morning tea or hot beverage is a strategic way to get your daily dose of antioxidants—even when you’re on a time crunch.

6. Relieve Seasonal Allergies

Do you have seasonal allergies to pollen, trees, grass, or other outdoor elements? Honey may be a natural remedy for you! If you purchase organic honey from a local source, the bees pollinate local flowers from your area. Consuming this local honey is thought to help alleviate your allergies from the inside out, allowing you to build natural tolerance to your allergens. Adding it to your daily cup of tea is a perfect way to fight allergies, as regular consumption is best to notice a significant change in your symptoms.

7. Ease a Sore Throat

Anyone who suffers from sore throats knows that this painstaking symptom is annoying to say the least. Whether your sore throat is from a common cold or chronic allergies, honey is a great way to soothe the pain. Adding a few teaspoons to your favorite cup of tea will coat your throat and provide some much needed relief. Don’t rely on over-the-counter pain meds when you can get relief from a natural and non-habit forming remedy.

Honey isn’t just a natural way to sweeten your tea, coffee, or baked goods! It poses numerous health benefits, making it an excellent choice for a variety of reasons. What other foods and drinks do you use honey for? Have you reaped the health benefits of honey yet?

It’s a wonderful, no non sense website which has worked wonders for me! I never miss any post of beautytips4her as I follow it almost daily on fb!

Had a query regarding this post of yours. I’ve heard somewhere (maybe in Ayurveda – not sure) that honey shouldn’t be warmed up when it’s taken. Should be taken at room temperature. So if we mix it in tea, won’t the temperature affect it’s benefits?

Btw, you’re a blessing for all those nature lovers and health conscious people like me! Keep up the good work!

      hi Nazish,
Just add honey when your tea is getting warm, not boiling hot.
