If your hair is fine or thin, you probably want to find ways that you can thicken your hair so it looks more voluminous. Unfortunately, if you head to the store for hair products that add volume, you’ll find that most contain harsh chemicals that may actually cause hair damage.
While you want to have thick, full hair, you also want it to look healthy and shiny. The better choice is to find some natural ingredients that will help give you the thicker, more beautiful hair that you want.
Harsh chemicals are bad for your hair and your skin. If you use them on your hair, those chemicals may be absorbed into your body. No one wants to put chemicals in their body.
Those harsh chemicals may also result in hair loss or hair breakage, problems that you don’t need if you are already dealing with fine or thin hair.
Thinning Hair – A Common Problem
If you’re dealing with thinning hair, you’re not alone. In fact, statistics show that about 60% of women deal with hair loss or thinning hair. Many different issues can cause thinning hair or hair loss.
Sometimes particular vitamin deficiencies may result in thinning hair. Certain health conditions may also result in hair loss or thinning. Thinning hair even runs in some families, unfortunately.
In some cases, you may not be aware of the cause of your thinning hair. The good news is that you can naturally thicken your hair using natural ingredients. It’s actually fairly easy to naturally thicken hair and you’ll enjoy great results.
Common Causes of Thinning Hair
Before looking at the ways you can naturally thicken your hair, it’s important to understand some of the most common causes of thinning hair. The following are only a few of the problems that may result in hair loss or thinning.
Consider seeing a good Naturopathic doctor that can help you figure out the cause behind your thinning hair. Then you’ll be better able to treat the problem.
- Cause #1 – Deficiency in Copper
Your body needs copper and a copper deficiency could result in thinning hair, as well as other physical symptoms, including fatigue. Copper is often tough for the body absorb, which is why this is such a common problem. People who regularly take zinc supplements are more likely to deal with a copper deficiency. Start supplementing with some copper and you should see your hair start thickening and growing again. - Cause #2 – Hypothyroidism
Unfortunately, if your thyroid isn’t functioning the way it should, it could affect your hair. Hyperthyroidism often causes hair loss and thinning. The good news is that it only takes a blood test to find out if this is your problem. - Cause #3 – Shampoo
Some shampoos contain ingredients that could be harmful to your scalp and hair, such as sodium laureth sulfate. This ingredient is actually linked to hair thinning and hair loss. To avoid the problem, start using a natural shampoo on your hair. One idea is to use castile soap to make your own all-natural shampoo. - Cause #4 – Vitamin D Deficiency
Another deficiency that could result in hair loss or thinning hair is a vitamin D deficiency. People who don’t get enough of this vitamin often end up dealing with hair loss. - Cause #5 – Stress
If you are stressed out all the time, it could be causing your hair loss problem. When levels of cortisol are constantly high, it could cause hair to thin and fall out. - Cause #6 – Deficiency in Manganese
You could be dealing with a manganese deficiency, which could cause your hair to thin. Some research shows that women with a manganese deficiency can start regrowing hair in a few short months when they started taking a daily manganese supplement. - Cause #7 – Hormonal Imbalances
If your hormones are out of whack, they could be resulting in hair loss or thinning hair. Unbalanced levels of testosterone or estrogen could both cause this problem.
5 Natural Ways to Thicken Hair
Now that you’re aware of some of the causes of thinning hair, you probably want to get right to the best ways to thicken your hair with natural ingredients. Use the following methods to enjoy thicker hair.
① Way #1 – Apply Onion Juice
Applying onion juice to your hair and scalp doesn’t sound very appealing, but it can offer some great results. Onion juice helps to reduce inflammation and improve circulation around the hair follicles.
This helps to reduce breakage and improves hair growth. Onion juice also has antioxidants that will help to eliminate scalp buildup, particularly hydrogen peroxide buildup, which is important, since this buildup could cause hair loss.
See how to make onion juice and how to use it to thicken hair naturally in my post, here.
② Way #2 – Castor Oil
Another natural way that you can thicken your hair is to start using castor oil. It has been shown to help improve hair growth and can even help eyelashes grow faster. Castor oil has antifungal, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, offering a number of important health benefits.
It also contains vitamin E, omega 3s, ricinoleic acid and a variety of other important proteins and minerals. All these nutrients work together to nourish the scalp and hair, improving hair growth.
How to use it:
Take a few tablespoons of castor oil (use more or less depending on how long your hair is) and massage it into your scalp. Make sure to use pure castor oil that is hexane free.
It is a thick oil so it may be a little difficult to spread. You can mix it with a thinner oil to make it a little easier to put on, like coconut oil. (Just mix 1/2 coconut oil with 1/2 castor oil).
Continue to massage it into your scalp for several minutes, then begin to work it through the rest of your hair. Let it sit on your hair for an hour or two, then wash it out.
Try to do this at least once a week or several times a week for better results.
③ Way #3 – Essential Oils
Numerous essential oils can help improve hair growth while preventing problems with breakage. Common essential oils used for this purpose include cedarwood essential oil and grapeseed oil.
The grapeseed oil includes vitamin E and important fatty acids, which help to thicken hair. Other essential oils that may benefit hair include thyme oil, lavender oil, and rosemary oil.
④ Ginseng
Ginseng can be applied to your hair and scalp and it provides great results. The compounds in ginseng help to stimulate blood flow to the hair follicles and your scalp.
This ensures that cells regenerate quickly, improving hair growth. I used this American Ginseng Capsules., open them and mix with a bit of oil. Apply to your hair and scalp regularly for the best results.
How to use it:
Empty one ginseng powder capsule and add it to 3 to 4 tablespoons of oil (you can use coconut oil or jojoba oil). Stir the mixture and apply it to your scalp.
Continue to massage it into your scalp for about 5 minutes. Repeat several times per week or daily.
⑤ Scalp Massage
A simple, free way that you can begin naturally thickening your hair is to do your own scalp massage. Daily massaging your scalp will help to improve circulation and blood flow, which stimulates the growth of hair.
How To:
Spend about five minutes a couple times each day massaging the scalp. You’ll probably notice results in a few weeks, and it’s very relaxing as well.
2 Ways To Make Your Hair Look Thicker Instantly!
If you start using some of the above-mentioned ways to thicken your hair, you should see results in a few weeks or within a few months. But, if you want your hair to have more volume and look thicker instantly, there are two natural ways to do it.
① Baking Soda
Instead of washing your hair with shampoo, use baking soda. Typical shampoos leave behind the residue that builds up on the hair shaft and can leave your hair flatter, duller, and look thin.
How To:
To wash your hair with baking soda, take a 3 to 4 tablespoons of baking soda and add about 3/4 cup of water.
Mix them together and it will form a liquid mixture that can be used in place of shampoo. Wash/rinse thoroughly with cool water.
The baking soda removes the build-up of residue and will instantly leave your hair looking thicker.
With continued use, it also works great because it stimulates the hair follicles and the exfoliation it provides can boost hair growth over time.
① Apple Cider Vinegar
How To:
After you wash your hair, take 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar and pour it over your hair as a hair rinse. Do not rinse it out with water, leave it in your hair and dry as usual.
The apple cider vinegar is full of nutrients and it helps balance the pH levels of your scalp. After you dry your hair you will see it will have instantly more volume.
This is because the vinegar removes the build-up of residue on your hair.
Not only is apple cider vinegar great for adding volume to your hair instantly, but with continued use, it will also promote hair growth and decrease hair breakage due to its rich source of vitamins and nutrients.
