How many times have you been told to drink at least 64 ounces/2 liters of water each day? Sure, you’ve heard it repeatedly, but do you really know why water is so important?
Apparently, water hydrates your body, but it offers many other health benefits as well. If you’re not getting enough water each day, here are five ways it could be hurting your body.
① Difficulty Losing Weight
Lack of water could be making it difficult for you to lose weight. When you drink plenty of water, it makes it easier for your system to flush toxins out of your body. Plenty of water also makes it easier for your body to burn fat, reducing the strain on your kidneys and liver.
Water can even act as an appetite suppressant. In many cases, your feelings of hunger could actually be thirst. Before grabbing a snack, try drinking a glass or two of water.
② Skin Breakouts
Are you noticing skin breakouts? Do they seem to appear for no reason? If so, you might not be drinking enough water. Skin stays hydrated from the water you drink. Failing to drink enough water will hurt your skin.
③ Lowered Immune System
Drinking water is important if you want to avoid the flu or colds. Water is essential for lymph production, and your immune system uses lymph to circulate white blood cells and important nutrients to the body. This helps to prevent infections.
④ Problems with Mental Performance
Water is essential for transporting oxygen to your brain. This enables the brain to communicate with the rest of your body. Even a slight problem with dehydration may result in difficulty thinking clearly and concentrating. Increase your water intake to avoid problems with mental performance.
⑤ Stiff and Painful Joints
Sometimes stiff and painful joints can result because of a lack of lubrication. Your joints need to have moisture and lubrication to keep them flexible and strong, especially during cold, winter months. You can prevent stiff and painful joints by drinking plenty of water.
⑥ Depression
The brain cannot produce the serotonin your body needs if it doesn’t have enough water. Serotonin is a hormone that is essential for feeling calm and happy. Failure to drink enough water can negatively affect your needs, resulting anxiety or depression.
The Importance of Clean Water
When you do drink water, you need to make sure you’re taking in clean water. Most tap water within the United States and other countries around the world include fluoride and chlorine, as well as herbicides, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and fertilizers that aren’t eliminated from water when it is treated. Both fluoride and chlorine can yield adverse affect your health.
Consider investing in a good water filtration system. Most small tap water filters don’t eliminate fluoride, so you’ll need something more advanced, such as a distillation unit or reverse osmosis to remove fluoride.
It’s also a good idea to go with a shower head filter or a whole-house filter to keep you from inhaling chlorine fumes when bathing or showering.
Drinking water daily offers many significant health benefits. Just avoid bottled water and tap water, since they contain many chemicals (and plastic water bottles cause cancer!) so stick to filtered water. If you’re exercising, it’s a good idea to ensure you’re also taking in enough electrolytes with the water.
