How to Use Bay Leaves for Health Benefits – Not Just a Fragrant Scent and Delicious Flavor

At one time, I had a bay tree, and the intoxicating aroma of the leaves was just amazing. That was long ago, and after a move, the tree suddenly died. Well, not exactly suddenly.

It was stuck in a back room during the relocation and apparently, it needed both sunshine and water to survive. After reading all the benefits, these leaves provide. It may be time to get another plant.

Diabetes
Bay leaves may help people with type2 diabetes, according to a joint study by the USDA Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center and the NWFPA Agricultural University in Peshawar Pakistan.

How to Use It
The study found that subjects that consumed as little as three grams of leaf each day had lower glucose levels.

Respiratory Relief
Ancient Ayurvedic medicine, which is the oldest type of holistic medical system, recommends using bay leaf oil for respiratory problems. It helps by stimulating the passages and removing mucus and phlegm from the lungs.

How to Use It
Using it in a vaporizer allows you to inhale the steam containing the oil. You can also use fresh by leaf or dried leaves. Massaging the oil onto the chest was one method of treating those with asthma or allergies.

When you burn a bay leaf, these compounds become airborne. Once inhaled, they will reduce any respiratory inflammation. This can work wonders if you suffer from allergies or have a bad cold.

Anxiety and Fatigue
Use the bay leaf to reduce both anxiety and fatigue. It’s easy to understand how inhaling the scent of this plant can help relax your body. It’s heavenly.

It’s also very calming, thanks to the natural ingredients of pinene, elemicin, and cineol that when burned has a calming almost psychedelic effect. The leaf’s oils have pinene, cineol, and elemicin compounds.

How to Use It
Within 10 minutes of smelling a burning bay leaf, linalool begins working. Some have even described the effect as mildly psychedelic. Burning this combination of chemicals causes a stimulating, yet calm slightly mind enhancing the effect. You won’t become sleepy, but rather more alert and less fatigued while relaxing you at the same time.

Just take a few dry bay leaves and light them up the same way you would with the incense. Let it burn out and fill the air with the smoke, just hang out in the room and breath in the smoke.

Digestion
One reason bay leaf may be essential to cooking is its ability to aid digestion. Many ancient cultures believed the leaf had great healing power and often used to improve digestion.

How to Use It
Use the bay leaves oil and rub on the stomach after consuming a meal to improve digestion and enzyme action.

Urinary Infections
Just as cranberry juice is often used to treat urinary tract infections, an Ayurvedic medicine used powdered bay leaf and milk to do the same thing.

How to Use It
Ground the bay leaves into powder and add to your warm glass of milk. Drink.

Joint Inflammation

How to Use It
If you have aching painful joints, consider getting relief from the pain by rubbing on bay leaf essential oil. It has an anti-inflammatory effect that helps not only the joints but also all the inflammation throughout the body.

Burning the leaves can also bring relief from arthritis while making you more relaxed. One study in “Phytotherapy Research” in 2003 showed it had the same effect as pain relievers as potent as morphine.

Heart Problem
Inflammation causes many heart conditions. Not only does bay leaf help reduce inflammation, but it also helps strengthen the walls of capillaries, with a substance known as caffeic acid.

It also helps lower the bad cholesterol in your system. It may be one reason the Mediterranean diet is so heart healthy.

Dandruff

How to Use It
To treat dandruff, mix it with warmed jojoba oil. Massage the warm home treatment into your scalp, wrap your head in a towel, and rest for 15 to 60 minutes.

In Ayurvedic remedies, you can add a few drops of bay leaf oil into your daily shampoo to fight dandruff.
